Transitioning from School to Work
The Federal Parliament’s Standing Committee on Education and Training Committee was asked to inquire into and report on how students are supported from school to work. Of particular interest to GIFSA are young people with disability and the challenges they have transitioning from school to work within the rural and remote context.
Young people with disability experience significant disadvantage in completing school and transitioning to employment. The evidence shows that:
· Secondary school completion rates among people with a disability are 41 % compared to 62.8 % for people without disability;
· 42 % of young people (15 -24) with disability neither work nor study;
· If a person with intellectual disability does not experience paid employment by 21, it is unlikely they ever will;
· Only 7 % of young people with intellectual disability identified their school as encouraging them to take an employment pathway.
GIFSA is encouraging people to make a submission. Details at - http://www.aph.gov.au
